PHOENIX — Fire has destroyed a popular restaurant at a historic tourist attraction east of Phoenix early Tuesday morning.

The Mining Camp Restaurant in Apache Junction went up in flames that took hours to put out.

Superstition Fire and Medical District Division Chief Richard Ochs said the owners, who lived next door at the hotel, escaped unharmed.

Ochs said the fire had been burning for a while before crews arrived around 3 a.m.

“It will likely be later in the day before we’ll have a clue on what may have happened,” he said.

The site includes a gift shop and a banquet room for special events such as weddings, business parties and fundraisers. The restaurant opened in 1961.

The Dutchman’s Hide Out steakhouse was recently featured on a segment of the ABC hidden-camera ethical behavior show “What Would You Do?” The episode aired July 7.
