PHOENIX — Nearly a dozen people were hustled out of their homes Monday morning after a fire broke out in a Phoenix apartment complex.

No one was seriously injured, but eight residents were displaced.

The 3 a.m. fire destroyed a third-floor unit and damaged several others on 36th Street just north of Thomas Road. Smoke filled the air for several blocks.

Phoenix Fire Captain Reda Bigler said residents made their way to safety by taking the stairs.

“We treated a woman for minor smoke inhalation after she went back in for her cat. She’s going to be fine and didn’t have to be transported,” Bigler said, adding the cat was safe.

Cause of the fire was under investigation.
