Idaho Legislature passes felony animal cruelty law

BOISE, Idaho (AP) – The Idaho Legislature has approved a felony animal cruelty law, putting the state in position to get off a very short list of others that don’t impose tough penalties for mistreating pets and livestock.

If the legislation is not vetoed, only the Dakotas would lack such a law.

A spokesman for Gov. Butch Otter has said the Republican governor won’t consider the bill until next week.

Senate lawmakers approved the plan Thursday, which enhances penalties for cockfighting and multiple misdemeanor animal cruelty convictions. The House supported the plan earlier this week.

The bill exempts normal animal production practices, earning its support from livestock producers

Senate lawmakers backed the measure in a 24-11 vote.
