PHOENIX — Pounding rain, hail and wind can do a real number on our roofs.
It doesn’t matter if it’s flat or pitched, a roof and gutters need to be cared for during monsoon season.
Flat roofs can collect a lot of rain water in a very short time.
Rosie Romero, the host of “Rosie on the House,” said failure to keep roof drains, or scuppers, clear of leafy debris can lead to very big problems.
“Actually to the point where the weight load of the water can cause structural failures. There’s also the possibility of the water ponding to the point where it can actually get access into the house,” Romero said.
If ponding happens, water could enter your home through exhaust fans, either through the bathroom or kitchen or a plumbing vent pipe connection.
Romero said homeowners should also clear their gutters of vegetation.
“Make sure your gutters and down spouts are clear as well. Make sure the pine needles or whatever leaf or tree or vegetation around your house hasn’t created a debris dam,” he said.
Romero added it doesn’t take much leaf debris to clog a roof scupper and prevent water from draining off a roof.
