PHOENIX — So, you had a bit too much to drink last night. Don’t worry, you’re not alone.

Nursing a New Year’s hangover is tough but it can be done. Start by rolling out of bed and grabbing a big glass of water.

“The first thing you need to do is get hydrated,” Scottsdale-based Dr. Terry Simpson said. “Most of the headaches, most of the feeling bad is because the alcohol causes dehydration.”

Fluids with electrolytes can be helpful as well, think Gatorade or Smart Water.

The next step is to chow down.

“You’re wanting to have your guts have some food in them because you’re going to be a little nauseated,” Simpson said. “That will help, it will decrease your stomach acids and make it feel better.”

After that you can probably take an over the counter pain reliever if needed.

Warning: it can be dangerous to take a pain reliever if you haven’t rehydrated. If your urine is still dark yellow, refrain until it becomes lighter.

Above all other tips, Simpson advised to not drink anymore alcohol the next morning — because it won’t help.

“Hair of the dog doesn’t help anybody, not even the dog,” he said. “It will make you feel worse and prolong the hangover.”

We want to hear from you.
