PHOENIX — About a dozen people have begun going through a boot camp in Phoenix.

No, they’re not in the military. They are aspiring web developers who have embarked on a 12-week
“RockIT” boot camp to learn everything about being an entry-level web professional.

One day of camp featured a competition to see who could redesign a charity’s website before the day was over.

“They really learn best with real-world projects,” said Greg Lamoreaux, RockIT’s director of curriculum.

He said that anyone who is interested in finding out more about the program should check out one of the workshops being offered.

“People can come down for four-hour workshops and just learn the basics about web programming,” Lamoureaux said. “It’s free, and you’re going to be able to tell what makes a good website and what makes a poor website.”

Instructor Brad Westphal said learning to be a web developer isn’t as some people think.

“A lot of it is just building the confidence with students, getting them in here and showing that ‘you can do it,'” Westphal said. “Not only can you do it, but you can be job-qualified ready, with an entry level job that pays close to $50,000 to $60,000.”

Tuition for the 12-week boot camp is $8,000. The next open camp begins in mid-January.

We want to hear from you.
