PHOENIX — With the school year coming to a close for the three public universities in the state of Arizona, commencement season is set to begin.

Ceremonies begin on Monday at 9 a.m. at Arizona State University’s Wells Fargo Arena for graduate students and continues into the night with the undergraduate ceremony, which begins at 7:30 p.m. at Sun Devil Stadium.

The University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University will celebrate their commencements on Friday and Saturday.

Each campus has instituted a clear bag policy for the events.

Melissa Werner, director of university ceremonies at Arizona State, told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Tuesday that there is a lot more that goes into a day of commencement besides just going to the event.

“It’s a long day for people so we just want them to be prepared, make sure they know where they are heading and have all their information ready to go,” Werner said.

“There are lots of crowds, parking gets really hectic. We really recommend that people come in on the light rail, if they can. Or do Uber or Lyft because it just makes getting to the events that much easier.”

In Tempe at ASU, two road closures will force detours at Packard Drive in both directions between College Avenue and University Drive and on Sixth Street westbound at Rural Road May 6 and 7 from 8 to 10 p.m.

For those who can’t make it to the event, ASU will have a live stream on the school’s web page, Werner said.

David Brooks of the New York Times will be the keynote speaker at Arizona State and at University of Arizona, Dr. Mae C Jemison will give the commencement speech.

More information for commencement ceremonies at Arizona State, Arizona and Northern Arizona can be found at each school’s website.
