ASU professor moves NASA shirts in store, Twitter goes crazy

PHOENIX — We all hear about the first man on the moon, but one Arizona State University professor wants to make sure that everybody knows it’s not just men who travel to space.
Katie Hinde, an associate professor at the Biodesign Center for Fundamental and Applied Microbiomics as well as an associate professor at the School of Human Evolution and Social Change, made a simple move in a store on Sunday.
She moved the NASA shirts from the boys section to the girls section.
She then put the picture on Twitter, with a caption that read, “Did I just take a bunch of NASA tank tops from the boys section & put them in the girls section? Yes. Yes I did.”
The post then went viral, getting hundreds of thousands of interactions.
“I was completely shocked by the magnitude of the response, didn’t expect that at all,” Hinde wrote in an email to SFGATE. “But I also think that some of the pushback has been important- the store (which I never tagged) has worked to improve science and action clothes for girls, that finding ways that protest to minimize impact on staff/workers is important.”
Some people who commented on her tweet were proud of her trying to rid of gender stereotyping, while others lashed out with angered responses of the extra work she was providing for employees of the store.
