Bus crashes in Egypt kill 23, injure 17 others

CAIRO (AP) — Two separate road accidents in Egypt killed 23 Egyptians and injured 17 others on Sunday, officials said.

Husam Gamil, director of emergency services for the Red Sea governorate, said one accident occurred when a passenger bus flipped over near the resort city of Hurghada, killing 11 people and injuring 11 others.

Maj. Gen. Mohamed Ismail, a local security director, said 12 people were killed and another six injured when their minibus collided with a truck carrying construction materials near Wadi Natrun, some 125 kilometers (78 miles) northwest of Cairo.

Deadly road accidents claim thousands of lives in Egypt every year. They are mostly caused by speeding, bad roads or lack of regular vehicle maintenance. The World Health Organization says traffic accidents claim the lives of about 12,000 people a year in Egypt.
