Poynter senior faculty member dies after illness

Jan 23, 2013, 10:35 PM

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) – Paul Pohlman, a senior faculty member at The Poynter Institute, died Wednesday in St. Petersburg after a brief illness.

According to Poynter’s website, Pohlman, 70, started teaching at the institute in 1979, joining fulltime 10 years later as head of what was then called the Management Center. Since then, he led leadership programs and coordinated international training. He also consulted and advised as associate dean and interim dean.

Poynter Vice President Roy Peter Clark confirmed the death and said Pohlman was an excellent educator,

“He was an exceptionally good listener and often taught professionals how to do that in their own organizations,” Clark said. “He was an expert in various roles that leaders play in their organizations. He was an encouraging teacher, and he was never a scold.”

Pohlman was part of the team that helped establish the Institute for the Advancement of Journalism in Johannesburg, South Africa. He went on to teach in South Africa for many years.

Before going to work for Poynter, Pohlman was director of management development programs and newspaper management education at the University of Chicago, where he also earned a master’s degree in history. His earned his undergraduate degree at Cornell College in Iowa.
