2 men plead not guilty in Tamil Tiger case in NYC

Dec 27, 2012, 9:12 PM

NEW YORK (AP) – Two men from Sri Lanka have pleaded not guilty in New York to charges they sought to give military and other support to the Tamil Tigers rebel force.

The men were extradited from Canada to face charges in the long-running case Thursday in federal court in Brooklyn. They’ve been ordered held without bail.

One is charged with conspiring to obtain $1 million in missiles and other weapons for the Tamil Tigers. The other is accused of helping the group get design software for submarines and warships.

The U.S. Department of State designated the Tamil Tigers a terrorist organization in 1997. In 2009, the group admitted defeat in a 25-year war with the Sri Lankan government.

The fighting left more than 70,000 people dead.
