Guyana judge dismisses treason case against trio

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) – A judge in Guyana has dismissed charges against a Guyanese army major and two others in the South American country.
Police accused the trio of taking part in a July 2009 arson attack on a health ministry building. They were arrested in December 2010 and charged with plotting to overthrow the state at the end of a military intelligence operation.
But a judge ruled the government does not have evidence, and Maj. Bruce Munroe, his wife Carol-Ann and Leonard Wharton were freed Wednesday.
Relatives and supporters hugged the three outside court. Munroe told reporters the group has been vindicated and he is thankful that “the truth did come out in court.”
Special prosecutor Vic Puran says he will explore if new charges can be filed.
