Pharmaceutical company plans major Mass. expansion

Apr 12, 2013, 10:37 AM

DEVENS, Mass. (AP) – Drug maker Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. has announced a $250 million expansion of its central Massachusetts manufacturing complex that will eventually employ an additional 350 workers.

The expansion announced Thursday will add space for developing biotechnology drugs, called biologics, and for manufacturing those products for clinical trials.

Construction is expected to begin later this year and be completed in 2015.

Lou Schmukler, the president of global manufacturing and supply for Bristol-Myers Squibb, said in a statement the plan will help the company accelerate the development of biologics.

The plan was praised by Gov. Deval Patrick, who has made developing the life sciences sector a key priority of his economic plan.

The New York-based company already employs 400 people at its 89-acre campus at the former Army base.
