PHOENIX — As the sun peeked out over the sky for the first time Wednesday morning, Peoria firefighters received a call they will never forget.
The caller, who rang at about 5:30 a.m., said that her daughter was in the process of giving birth at her home and needed help.
A Peoria Fire-Medical Department crew rushed to the woman’s home; by the time they got there, the baby’s head was already visible.
Firefighters helped deliver the healthy baby boy into his mother’s arms about an hour after the call.
“Peoria Fire-Medical unfortunately runs on a lot of calls that are not this happy, so it’s great when you come across something like this and see a new life coming into this world, especially when everyone is healthy,” Capt. Mark Barbee told KTAR News 92.3 FM.
The mother and the boy were taken to hospital, where they still were as of Friday, Barbee said.
Barbee said the call was a positive shot in the arm for the department, especially since mother and child were healthy.
“It’s definitely a positive. It’s uplifting,” Barbee said.
