Mohave County Sheriff’s Office rescues dog from mine shaft

PHOENIX — The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office came to the rescue of a dog who had fallen into a mine shaft on Saturday.

The nearly one-year-old dog named Shelby had fallen into a mine shaft near the Katherine Mine around 11:30 a.m., just outside of Bullhead City.

She was too deep for her owners to reach her so they called the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office Animal Enforcement and Search and Rescue team, according to a press release.

Rescuers established a technical rope system using a twin-tensioned line and lowered a member of the team about 100 feet down, where Shelby was moving around at the bottom of the mine shaft.

The dog was then packaged and secured for transport back up to the surface where Shelby was reunited with her owners.

Luckily the dog only appeared to have a few bumps and bruises from the fall on initial assessment by an animal enforcement officer, according to the release.
