PHOENIX — U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona is chairing a subcommittee that has jurisdiction over government efficiency and border management.

The subcommittee – a part of the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee – will work to ensure smart and effective border security, improve the reliability of the Postal Service and safeguard taxpayers against government waste and inefficiency, according to a press release.

“Arizonans recognize the need for smarter, more effective border security and management—and communities and small businesses across our state rely on the U.S. Postal Service for deliveries of lifesaving prescriptions and critical goods,” Sinema said in the release.

The panel will also have jurisdiction over American economic competitiveness, the U.S. Census, contracting and energy issues as well as regulatory and federal employee policy.

Sinema is working alongside Republican Sen. James Lankford of Oklahoma on the panel that replaces a previous subcommittee the two served on.

“I’m proud to partner again with Senator Lankford and lead bipartisan efforts to ensure the federal government meets these obligations for Arizona and the nation,” Sinema said.

The U.S. Senate unanimously passed a bill the two worked on in the past which required every proposed regulation to be accompanied by a plain-language summary, according to the release, in addition to another bill that made stealing or misusing federal retirees’ benefits a felony.

Sinema also serves on committee assignments focusing on banking, housing and urban affairs; commerce, science and transportation; and veterans’ affairs.
