PHOENIX – Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey ordered flags lowered to half-staff on all state buildings in honor of the U.S. Capitol police officers who died last week.
Ducey said Sunday the flags would remain at half-staff through Wednesday at sunset.
Five people were killed and dozens of officers were injured during mob violence at the nation’s capital on Jan. 6.
Officer Brian Sicknick died after he was hit in the head with a fire extinguisher as rioters descended on the Capitol building as lawmakers began their work to affirm President-elect Joe Biden’s victory.
Officer Howard Liebengood died off-duty Saturday, U.S. Capitol police said in a statement. He had been assigned to the Senate Division.
“Officers Sicknick and Liebengood were tasked with protecting the living symbol of our democratic form of government,” Ducey said in a statement Sunday.
“They will be foremost in our thoughts as we vow to recommit to our shared values as Americans and to making sure something like this never happens again.”
