PHOENIX — A Phoenix-based rescue mission announced in a press release on Thursday it is teaming up with Hope for Hunger Food Bank to help provide turkeys for working-poor families impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.
The two organizations are aiming to collect 2,000 frozen turkeys on Saturday between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. during the drive-thru event at the Hope for Hunger Food Bank near Bethany Home Road and U.S. 60 in Glendale.
Phoenix Rescue Mission is hosting the turkey drive-thru as part of their “Fed Up! Hungry for Change” campaign to help end hunger in the Valley and help thousands of families who have lost jobs, been furloughed or had income dry up due to the pandemic.
More than 237,000 people were unemployed across the state in September, according to the University of Arizona, a nearly 45% increase from 2019.
The turkeys collected during the event will be given to families later in November during the mission’s Public Thanksgiving Meal Distribution Day at the food bank, according to the release.
