NYC aquarium rebounds, rebuilds after Sandy

NEW YORK (AP) – The New York Aquarium has cherished its big-city setting by the sea for half a century. But the ocean that is the aquarium’s lifeblood dealt it a shattering blow last fall.
Five months later, more than 80 percent of the collection is intact. The parent Wildlife Conservation Society intends to reopen about half the aquarium in late spring.
A planned expansion of its shark exhibit remains on track. Now, that’s coupled with rebuilding and floodproofing the Coney Island institution.
Aquarium Director Jon Forrest Dohlin (DOH’-lihn) says directors thought at points about whether the aquarium could survive there.
He says they want to be there, tell the story of how the aquarium handled the storm and talk about how New York can weather the future in its coastal environment.
