Suspect taken into custody 2 days after fatal Phoenix shooting

PHOENIX – An 18-year-old suspect was taken into custody two days after a fatal Phoenix shooting last week, authorities announced Monday.

The shooting occurred around 9 p.m. Tuesday in a parking lot at 35th Avenue and Van Buren Street, the Phoenix Police Department said.

The victim, 18-year-old Jose Castillo, succumbed to his injuries after being taken to a hospital by emergency responders.

“Homicide detectives assumed the investigation and learned that prior to the shooting, an altercation happened in the parking lot between the two involved subjects,” Sgt. Brian Bower said in a media advisory.

Investigators used evidence and witness statements to identify 18-year-old Ruben Ruiz Jr. as the suspect.

Ruiz was arrested Thursday and booked into jail on suspicion of second-degree murder. His bond was set at $500,000.

The investigation into the deadly Phoenix shooting is ongoing.
