Truck driver suspected of DUI after fatal collision involving dirt bike in Phoenix

PHOENIX – Impairment might have been a factor in fatal collision between a truck and a dirt bike in south Phoenix on Wednesday night, authorities said.

Officers responded to a call in the area of 16th Street and Southern Avenue just before 10 p.m. and found two people on the ground next to a motorcycle, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Both patients were taken to a hospital, where 19-year old Britney Vasquez Gomez died from her injuries.

The man who was driving the dirt bike suffered injuries that aren’t considered life-threatening, police said.

The driver of the truck involved in the collision remained at the scene.

According to preliminary information from police, the motorcycle was traveling south on 16th Street when it collided with the northbound truck as it was turning left into a private drive.

The dirt bike driver didn’t show signs of impairment, but the truck driver was evaluated and processed for DUI, police said.

“Charging decisions will not be determined until the conclusion of the investigation,” Sgt. Lorraine Fernandez said in a media advisory.
