Glendale police release video from May incident where police shot man armed with knife

The Glendale Police Department released a critical incident briefing video Friday regarding a domestic violence incident from May, where an officer shot a man who was armed with a knife.

It briefs an incident that occurred on Wednesday, May 20, at a shopping plaza near 63rd Avenue and Bell Road.

Authorities advised the video may contain content that is sensitive to viewers.

Glendale Police release video details incident, steps taken

The incident began when a woman revealed a cut on her hand while speaking with the store’s manager and told her to “Call 911,” which caused the man to become upset and the manager to call 911.

Officers were dispatched to the businesses just before 10 a.m., and witnesses told them the man had entered with a woman, who was trying to purchase a firearm.

When officers entered the business, they told the couple to step away from each other and the man proceeded to wrap his arms around the woman from behind.

Officers attempted to free the woman from the man’s arms causing him to draw a knife. Police stepped back and drew their weapons. One officer fired his taser, and the other officer shot the man.

The suspect was taken into custody and given medical aid before being taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Meanwhile, the woman was brought to safety and received treatment for injuries she sustained prior to the shooting.

There were no other injuries as a result of the incident.

There are internal and criminal reviews underway, which will be sent to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office for further review. Once that review is complete, the findings will be sent back to the Glendale Police Department, and a Response to Resistance Board will be convened, with the purpose of determining whether the force used was within policy.

This process can take several months or longer to complete.
