Man armed with knife wounded by Glendale police during domestic violence call at shopping plaza

A man who was threatening a woman with a knife was shot and wounded by a Glendale police officer Wednesday morning at a business in the northwest Valley, police said.

Officers were dispatched just before 10 a.m. to a business near 63rd Avenue and Bell Road, according to the Glendale Police Department.

Witnesses told authorities the man entered the business with a woman, who was trying to purchase a firearm. While speaking with the store’s manager, the woman revealed a large cut on her hand and mouthed “Call 911.” That caused the man to become upset and the manager to call 911.

When officers arrived at the scene, they told the couple to step away from each other and the man proceeded to wrap his arms around the woman’s neck from behind before pulling out a knife. When one officer’s taser didn’t work, the second officer shot the suspect.

The man was taken into custody and given medical aid before being taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Meanwhile, the woman was brought to safety and received treatment for injuries she sustained prior to the shooting.

There were no other injuries as a result of the incident.

The Buckeye Police Department is investigating the Glendale shooting as part of the West Valley Incident Response Team.
