Homicide suspect who was injured during arrest in Mesa has been booked into jail

A homicide suspect who was injured while police apprehended him in Mesa last week has been booked into jail, authorities announced Monday.

Abishai Ben Israel was processed on 17 counts of aggravated assault and one count of misconduct involving weapons after getting out of the hospital, according to the Mesa Police Department. His bond was set at $500,000.

Officers responded to a call of a shooting at an apartment complex near Dobson and Broadway roads around 11 p.m. Friday.

They located an adult male who had died with signs of trauma.

Witness accounts and police resources led to the location of a suspect, later identified as Israel, who was barricaded inside an apartment.

Gunfire was exchanged before Mesa police apprehended the suspect

The suspect and officers exchanged gunfire during attempted negotiations, but no one was struck.

Israel refused to cooperate as he exited the apartment, which is when officers used less-lethal tools to subdue him.

He was hospitalized for minor injuries from the less-lethal tools, including a beanbag shotgun and Taser, before he was taken to jail.

The name of the homicide victim has not been released. Investigators are still working to determine the relationship between Israel and the victim.

The Scottsdale Police Department is investigating the police shooting.
