Winter Storm Fern causes nearly 120 flight cancellations out of Sky Harbor in 1 day

PHOENIX — Winter Storm Fern, which has wreaked havoc in much of the U.S. the last few days, caused 119 flights to be canceled Tuesday at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Nearly all of the flight cancellations were being serviced by American Airlines (116).

A total of 243 flights were delayed Tuesday after more than 220 were canceled or delayed between Saturday and Sunday morning.

American Airlines in a press release said its two travel alerts, with provisions of giving travelers the option to change their trip with no fee, have been extended through Thursday.

The carrier said it was working around the clock to fully restore operations in the wake of the storm.

Dallas Forth Worth International Airport, which has been particularly disrupted by the storm, has seen “improved” ramp conditions and more flights have arrived than Monday.

The winter storm was expected to accumulate “catastrophic” ice and cause “widespread power outages and tree damage” through Monday, according to NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center.

Winter Storm Fern has covered more than 34 states and is impacting more than 220 million Americans.
