Arizona Public Service (APS) customers will receive a one-time credit of about $14.70 on their November electric bills after the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) unanimously approved the measure on Thursday.

The credit stems in part from the success of APS’ Green Power Partners program, which allows commercial and industrial customers to voluntarily purchase renewable energy credits from the utility. The program helped generate an approximately $33.6 million uncommitted balance in APS’ Renewable Energy Adjustment Charge (REAC) fund.

The fund supports renewable energy costs and appears on residential bills as an “Environmental Benefits Surcharge” of about $2.49. In addition to the one-time APS bill credit, customers will not be charged the monthly REAC fund on their November statements.

“The success of APS’ Green Powers program has allowed for a credit to customers’ bills in November,” ACC Commissioner Lea Márquez Peterson said in a press release. “This comes at a good time for residential customers who saw higher bills due to increased usage during the hot summer months. I was happy to support the credit on APS customer’s bills today during our ACC meeting.”

The ACC’s unanimous vote came among its five members: Márquez Peterson, Chairman Nick Myers, Vice Chair Rachel Walden, Commissioner Kevin Thompson and Commissioner René Lopez.

“It is heartening to see that recent decisions we have made on the Commission are paying off for APS ratepayers by the return of approximately $33.6 million to households,” Lopez said.
