PHOENIX — High gas prices, boiling hot temperatures and regular car maintenance contribute to general disdain for long commutes to work.
If you live in Tempe, you might not have to worry about those long drives.
According to HomeArea.com, Tempe was ranked with the No. 1 overall fastest commute time on average of all Arizona cities with a working population of 60,000 or more.
Commuters in Tempe averaged 20.9 minutes on their commute to work, 4.4 minutes faster than the average for the state, which came in at 25.3.
Both of those times were slightly slower than the previous ranking. Last year, Tempe came in at 20.2 minutes while the state averaged 25.1 minutes.
In the previous ranking, Flagstaff came in No. 1. This year, the city did not have enough workers over the age of 16, according to the Census Bureau, to meet the criteria for the study.
Gilbert saw its average commute time decrease more than any other city on the list. Its average commute time dropped 1.6 minutes from 28.5 in 2017 to 26.9 in 2018.
Commute times in Glendale increased by 1.7 minutes from 26.5 in 2017 to 28.2 in 2018, more than any other city in Arizona.
Tucson and Scottsdale rounded out the three shortest average times, behind Tempe. Tucson was listed at 22.2 minutes, while in Scottsdale the average commute time was 22.6.
