PHOENIX — When you think of college students, senior citizens may not be the first thing that comes to mind. But a new housing facility on Arizona State University’s Tempe campus could soon change that.
Workers are expected to break ground on Mirabella at ASU, a “continuing care retirement community,” in February. The facility will be located at the corner of Mill Avenue and University Drive in Tempe.
According to its website, Mirabella at ASU will “[combine] urban sophistication with a rousing university environment for an incredible lifestyle.”
“Our prime location on Arizona State University’s Tempe campus puts you in the middle of it all while our full, on-site continuum of care provides you with peace of mind for the future,” the website said.
“Mirabella at ASU will engage older alumni and retired faculty, staff, and friends by providing lifelong learning, a continuum of healthcare services, and an environment rich in performing arts, social, athletic, and research activities.”
Mirabella at ASU will be developed by Pacific Retirement Services, an Oregon-based group that calls itself the “leader in the senior-service sector.” It also services more than 5,000 seniors in six states.
Plans for the development were first announced in 2016. It was first touted as a facility that would be “geared to older residents who want to stay close to the university and remain engaged in a younger environment.”
According to the Phoenix New Times, nearly 500 people had put their names on a waiting list to live at the high-rise. Residents need to be at least 62 years old to call the facility home.
Mirabella at ASU is expected to be complete by 2020.
