1 dead after vehicle crashes into pole, catches fire in Phoenix

PHOENIX — A driver is dead after their vehicle caught fire when they lost control and crashed into a pole in Phoenix on Sunday night, authorities said.

The deceased driver has not been identified yet, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Officers responded to the area of 15th Avenue and Broadway Road around 8 p.m. regarding reports of a collision with injuries. As officers were on their way to the scene, they received reports that the vehicle was on fire.

Phoenix Fire personnel extinguished the fire and found the driver dead inside the car, police said.

Preliminary information suggests the driver was traveling westbound on Broadway Road at a high rate of speed when they lost control and struck the pole.

It is not currently known if impairment played a role in the crash, according to police.

The investigation into the fatal crash is ongoing.
