The Valley youth baseball community is rallying around a 10-year-old player as he battles cancer.

Jayden Cardona, who plays for the Legends 11U team in Chandler, was diagnosed with a type of pediatric bone tumor called Ewing sarcoma on May 14.

Jayden had surgery remove the mass Tuesday and is recovering in the ICU. While he recovers, a youth baseball tournament called “Jayden’s Fight, Your Swing” will be held to financially support his family.

“Every swing, every hit, every dollar raised brings hope,” Bri Wick, the Legends team parent who organized the tournament, said in a news release. “Jayden is facing the toughest fight of his young life, and we want him to know his entire community is behind him even while he’s recovering in the hospital.”

A pre-tournament event with a home run derby will be held Friday starting at 6 p.m. at McQueen Park in Gilbert.

Games are set for Saturday and Sunday at Fiesta Park in Mesa for 9U, 10U and 11U teams, and Espee Park in Chandler for 12U and 13U teams. Teams are guaranteed to play three games.

All proceeds will go directly to Jayden’s family to help cover medical expenses.

Donations can be made through the tournament’s website.
