Rachel Mitchell confirms 8 noncitizens found on Maricopa County voter rolls
Eight of the 60 suspected noncitizen voters referred to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office earlier this year by the county recorder are not U.S. citizens, according to County Attorney Rachel Mitchell.
Mitchell says all eight received their first driver’s license before Oct. 1, 1996, when the MVD began requiring proof of citizenship. She says they were mistakenly classified as having already provided that proof, even though they had not.
Mitchell has not yet decided whether to file charges, but she is expanding her investigation to check for other issues with the voter rolls.
While Mitchell says the eight voters are not enough to sway an election, her office is conducting a systemic review of voter registration processes and calling for legislation to close the loophole.
