SunFed Produce recalls cucumbers sold in Arizona, other states due to salmonella outbreak

Nov 29, 2024, 4:00 PM

PHOENIX — SunFed Produce has recalled every size of its whole fresh American cucumbers due to a salmonella outbreak.

The cucumbers were sold between Oct. 12 through Nov. 26 and were packaged in bulk cardboard containers labeled “SunFed” or in a white box or black plastic crate featuring a sticker reading “Agrotato, S.A. de C.V.”

SunFed Produce is based in the southern Arizona city of Rio Rico.

According to the CDC, 68 people from 19 different states were infected from this strain of salmonella. No one has died but 18 people have been hospitalized. The illnesses were reported between Oct. 12 to Nov. 15.

The cucumbers were shipped to Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin, and to Alberta, British Columbia, Calgary, Saskatchewan and Ontario in Canada.

The CDC says you should not eat the cucumbers and throw them away or return them to the store you bought them from.

The public health agency urged consumers to use hot, soapy water or a dishwasher to clean any surfaces or items that may have come in contact with the cucumbers.

“As soon as we learned of this issue, we immediately acted to protect consumers. President at SunFed Craig Slate said in a release. “We are working closely with authorities and the implicated ranch to determine the possible cause. Here at SunFed, food safety and consumer health and wellness have been our priorities for more than 30 years. We require all of our growers to strictly comply with the FDA food safety requirements.”

Those who may have purchased the recalled cucumbers can receive more information by calling SunFed’s recall hotline at (888) 542-5849 from Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

According to the FDA, symptoms typically begin six hours to six days after infection and last for four to seven days.

People with weakened immune systems, young children or elderly people may suffer from fatal or serious infections from salmonella.

Healthy people infected by salmonella may suffer from fever, diarrhea (which could be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

No other SunFed products are connected to this recall.

We want to hear from you.
