Gilbert breaks ground on Vaughn Avenue Connector, a new access point to Heritage District

Gilbert broke ground on Vaughn Avenue Connector on Wednesday, which will create a new access point to the town’s Heritage District.

The project is expected to last about 15 months and will extend Vaughn Avenue west to connect with Neely Street. The roadway’s design will make it accessible for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

The project is a development of existing transportation infrastructure, which is being funded by voter-approved transportation bonds, a news release said.

The purpose is to address future traffic demands, improve safety and support economic development.

In addition to improving the flow and access of foot traffic for local businesses, the hope is that the addition of Vaughn Avenue Connector will attract future commercial investment and development opportunities, the release said.

The Gilbert project will relocate an existing stormwater basin next to railroad tracks to the south side of the railroad for greater effectiveness and capacity.

“Today’s groundbreaking is more than a construction milestone, it’s a promise to our residents that we’re investing in the places they love most,” Mayor Scott Anderson said in the release. “The Heritage District has always been the heart of Gilbert, and as our Town continues to grow, we’re committed to making sure that heart stays strong.

“This connector will make it easier for people to walk, bike and drive into the district, support the businesses that call it home, and set the stage for what’s next in this special part of our community.”
