‘San Andreas’ shakes up box office with $54.6M opening

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and a giant earthquake made for a winning pair at the box office as “San Andreas” claimed the top spot.

The action epic opened with $54.6 million. The weekend’s other new entry, the critically maligned Cameron Crowe film “Aloha,” opened in sixth place with $9.7 million.

The musical comedy “Pitch Perfect 2” continues to sing, adding another $14.8 million to its coffers for a second-place finish and a domestic take of more than $147 million since opening three weeks ago.

The top 20 movies at U.S. and Canadian theaters Friday through Sunday, followed by distribution studio, gross, number of theater locations, average receipts per location, total gross and number of weeks in release, as compiled Monday by Rentrak:
