PHOENIX — U.S. Rep. Debbie Lesko said she is staying in Arizona for the time being to undergo surgery to remove her gallbladder.
Lesko said in a press release Tuesday that doctors recommended she have the gallbladder taken out after she experienced gastrointestinal problems during the last several weeks.
“My physician has recommended that I do not fly to and from Washington, D.C. due to my condition and the risk of contracting COVID-19, which would delay my surgery,” Lesko said in the announcement.
Her statement didn’t specify when surgery was scheduled, but Lesko added she was looking forward to returning to work “as soon as I am cleared by my physician.”
Lesko, a former state legislator, represents Arizona’s 8th Congressional District in the suburbs west of Phoenix.
She won a special election to fill a vacancy in the U.S. House in May 2018 and was reelected easily to her second full term in 2020.
A previous version of this story incorrectly reported Lesko was appointed to the U.S. House in May 2018.
