In this photo by Khin Maung Win, local residents carry water in plastic containers as others line up to fetch water from man-made ponds in Dala Township, south of Yangon, Myanmar. The water source is not good but is invaluable for local residents, particularly in the hot, dry months before monsoon rains begin in June. Dala is a 20-minute boat ride across the river from the nation’s largest city but it has chronic water shortages as its population has grown. When the residents return home, they let the dirty water sit for two or three days to clear before using it.
