PHOENIX — Gov. Doug Ducey will promote Arizona National Guard leader Kerry Muehlenbeck to the rank of major general in a ceremony in Phoenix on Sunday.
Brig. Gen. Muehlenbeck and Ducey will be joined by Arizona National Guard service members, Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs personnel, family and friends at the 11 a.m. ceremony at Papago Park Military Reservation near 52nd Street and McDowell Road.
Muehlenbeck replaced Michael McGuire as Arizona’s adjutant general and director of DEMA in April.
She manages the day-to-day activities of a nearly 8,300-member department that includes Arizona’s Army and Air National Guard, Joint Programs and the Division of Emergency Management.
The first woman to hold the position in its 156-year history, Muehlenbeck previously served as Arizona’s deputy adjutant general and has more than 20 years of military experience.
McGuire, who had held the position since 2013 before announcing his retirement in March, has filed papers to run for the U.S. Senate as a Republican in 2022.
