PHOENIX – Known for his motto “Country First”, former staff members of Sen. John McCain’s are proving their commitment to just that.

Over 100 former campaign, House and Senate staffers of the late McCain have added their names to a public endorsement of Democrat Joe Biden for president, according to medium.com.

A message posted on the website reads, “These are unusual times, and this is not an easy decision for Republicans to make. Many of us disagree with the positions espoused by the Democratic ticket, but we are heartened by Joe Biden’s history of bipartisanship.”

“John McCain had a very different vision for America and it was more aligned with Joe Biden’s than it is with Donald Trump’s,” Wes Gullett, who served as McCain’s Senate state director and his deputy campaign manager for the presidential race in 2000, told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Friday.

The goal of McCain’s staff is simple, yet something complicated in today’s political climate.

They hope to show voters you can choose a candidate over a party.

“What we’re trying to just say is that it’s alright for Republicans to vote for Joe Biden,” Gullett said. “It makes sense – we have shared values with Joe Biden.”

The list of names trusts that the former vice president would lead urgently during the pandemic and remember Americans’ common interests and responsibilities as president.

Despite that, Gullet was asked what he believes McCain would think seeing the list of names compiled in support of Biden.

“I have no idea, John was a very loyal Republican,” Gullet added.

“At the same time, I think he’d say ‘you’re doing the right thing.’”

We want to hear from you.
