PHOENIX — AMC, the nation’s largest movie theater chain, and others across metro Phoenix have announced plans to reopen amid the coronavirus outbreak.

AMC said Thursday it planned to open about 450 of its locations on July 15 and an additional 150 locations by July 24 for the opening of Disney’s “Mulan” and Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” the following week. (UPDATE: On June 29, AMC said it would open approximately 450 U.S. locations on July 30 and the remaining 150 the following week.)

The chain initially said it wouldn’t require patrons to wear masks, but reversed course Friday, citing feedback from scientific advisors and customers.

Most Arizona cities have enacted a mandatory mask policy for public places after Gov. Doug Ducey gave local governments the ability to do so Wednesday.

AMC will sell masks for $1 and anyone who is unwilling to wear a mask won’t be permitted in theaters.

AMC said all theaters will be at 30% capacity or less upon reopening and will implement other social distancing and sanitation procedures.

In Gilbert, Regal will require guests to wear a mask when the theater reopens July 10.

The theater will be limited to 50% capacity or less and limited amenities will be available.

Alamo Drafthouse, which has three Valley locations, hasn’t set a date for reopening but announced Friday it would require masks when service resumes.

The company said exceptions would be made while eating or drinking and that it would provide masks to customers.

The franchisee of the Phoenix area’s three Alamo Drafthouse in May filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, citing the impact of closures mandated in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Flix Brewhouse, which has a Chandler location, said Friday it intends to reopen for on July 31 for the premiere of “Tenet.”

Roadhouse Cinemas in Scottsdale, its only Valley location, opened its doors on June 10 for the first time since mid-March.
