PHOENIX – The Arizona Department of Health Services on Friday announced plans to extend the Arizona Testing Blitz an additional two weekends in order to test more residents for the coronavirus.
Initially, the testing blitz was expected to last a total of three weekends, with Saturday being the conclusion.
The additional dates will be May 23 and 30.
“To slow the spread of COVID-19 in our communities we need to identify cases and perform contact tracing, and the Arizona Testing Blitz is helping us to learn more about how the disease is spreading in our state,” AZDHS director Dr. Cara Christ said in a press release.
“While there have been thousands of diagnostic tests during the Saturday Testing Blitz events, we are pleased that testing has also been increasing during the week.”
During the first two weekends, more than 15,000 people were tested at the events, according to the release.
This Saturday will be the third weekend of testing with more than 70 testing sites across the state.
Testing is available to anyone who thinks they might have been exposed and could be infected with COVID-19.
Coronavirus antibody testing is not part of the program.
Online or phone pre-registration is required at nearly all testing sites.
As of Friday, the state has documented totals of 12,674 COVID-19 cases and 624 deaths.
