PHOENIX — The Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium and Safari Park welcomed two new additions recently.
The zoo announced the birth of not one, but two rare gibbon species.
Earlier in August, both a pileated and a white-handed gibbon were born.
Gibbons, which represent the most endangered primates globally, are small apes found in the tropical rainforests of southern and Southeast Asia. Although they do not have tails, they are among the quickest of all primates, and can even be seen walking along tree limbs on two legs.
Wildlife World is one of two zoos in the country that care for the pileated gibbon, with the newest edition marking the third birth of the species.
In all, the zoo has welcomed 12 gibbon babies over the past 18 years.
The birth of the pileated gibbon, the zoo’s third of its kind, brings the number of the endangered apes in the U.S. to 14.
In addition to the pileated and white-handed gibbons, the zoo also features siamang gibbons.
