Iconic Phoenix steakhouse Durant’s closes temporarily after sale

PHOENIX – Durant’s, the iconic old-school steakhouse in central Phoenix, is closing temporarily after being sold to the team behind the Valley’s Dominick’s Steakhouse, Steak 44 and Ocean 44 restaurants.

Durant’s was acquired by brothers Mike and Jeffrey Mastro, along with their father Dennis Mastro and business partner Scott Troilo. The Mastro brothers were 2020 James Beard Award semifinalists in the outstanding restaurateur category.

“My family and I are thrilled with the acquisition and intend to bring a renaissance to this iconic steakhouse and expand its legendary status for generations to come,” Mike Mastro said in a press release Wednesday.

Changes coming to Durant’s after sale

The new owners are planning renovations and kitchen improvements during the temporary closure but promise to preserve the dining room’s vintage look and feel. The menu will be enhanced, too, while maintaining the elements that made the steakhouse on Central Avenue south of Thomas Road a landmark.

No timeline was given for when Durant’s will reopen.

“It’s a privilege and honor to acquire the restaurant and to preserve its history, while enhancing its future for generations to come,” Jeffrey Mastro said.

Durant’s was founded by Jack Durant and Jack R. McElroy in 1950. The business remained in the family until second-generation owners Jack M. McElroy and Carol McElroy decided it was time for a new era to begin.

“It has been the honor and pleasure of a lifetime to serve the finest steaks, perfect martinis and heavenly desserts to our extended Durant’s Arizona ‘family’ for the past 75 years,” the McElroys said.
