SUV driver dead, passenger left with serious injuries after head-on collision in east Phoenix

The driver of an SUV is dead and a passenger is in the hospital after a head-on collision in east Phoenix on Saturday morning, authorities said.

The driver of an SUV is dead and a passenger is in the hospital after a head-on collision in east Phoenix on Saturday morning, authorities said.

Officers responded to the area of 36th Street and Thomas Road for a crash involving two vehicles around 6:35 a.m., according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Police and crews with the Phoenix Fire Department removed the 70-year-old male driver and 66-year-old female passenger from the SUV before they were taken to a nearby hospital. The man was pronounced dead at the hospital while the woman was described as having serious injuries.

The driver of the second car was not injured and did not show signs of impairment, police said.

Officers learned that the SUV driver veered into oncoming traffic for an unknown reason before colliding head-on with the other car, according to authorities.
