Mesa police officers shoot man who allegedly pointed gun at them

PHOENIX – A man was shot by police officers who were responding to call about a family fight in Mesa early Thursday, authorities said.

The police shooting occurred just after midnight at the 900 block of S. Pasadena, near Mesa Drive and Southern Avenue, according to the Mesa Police Department.

When two officers responded to the scene, the suspect came out of the home and pointed a gun at them. That prompted both officers to fire their duty weapons at the 33-year-old man, police said.

The suspect was provided medical attention at the scene before being taken to a hospital. He has been stabilized and is expected to survive, according to Mesa police.

The department added that once the suspect is released from the hospital, he will be booked into jail on charges that will include domestic violence.

The Tempe Police Department is investigating the Mesa police shooting as part of the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team.

Two other suspects shot by police earlier this week

The Mesa incident was the first of two overnight police shootings in the Valley. Glendale officers shot and killed a suicidal man who allegedly pointed a gun at them around 12:35 a.m.

In addition, metro Phoenix law enforcement agencies were involved in two other shootings earlier this week.

On Tuesday, officers with the Avondale Police Department shot and killed a man who was wielding what turned out to be a cap gun.

On Wednesday, a man was hospitalized with injuries that aren’t considered life-threatening after getting shot by Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office deputies at the White Tank Mountain Regional Park near Waddell.
