Man allegedly armed with cap gun killed in shooting involving Avondale officers

PHOENIX — A man who was killed in a shooting involving Avondale Police officers on Tuesday was armed with a cap gun, authorities announced Wednesday.

Carmelo Hernandez, 44, was killed in the shooting, which happened around 1:30 p.m. near Elwood Street and 125th Avenue, according to the Peoria Police Department.

Peoria police are investigating the shooting as part of the West Valley Investigative Response Team.

Peoria police said a 911 call was made on Tuesday regarding a shirtless man with a gun, but the caller did not provide any further information before hanging up.

When officers got to the area where the call was made, they found the man, now identified as Hernandez, who was verbally aggressive.

Hernandez allegedly began walking toward the officers and threw a screwdriver at them as the officers were telling him to put his hands up.

Hernandez also allegedly pointed a black revolver-style gun at the officers, at which point at least one of the officers shot Hernandez, according to Peoria police.

Hernandez was brought to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

No officers were injured in the incident.

Peoria police said the gun was later found to be a cap gun and that Hernandez was the person who made the initial 911 call.

The investigation into this shooting is still underway.
