PHOENIX – The number of passengers flying through Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport this summer reached a new record.
Between May and August, 593,231 travelers visited the airport, a 9% increase over the previous summer record set in 2022.
“This summer, travelers have had more options than ever to visit Arizona or escape the heat to one of the 45 nonstop destinations available at Gateway Airport,” J. Brian O’Neill, executive director and CEO of the airport, said in a press release. “We are excited that a record number of families are choosing the affordable, convenient options that Gateway Airport provide.”
The summer months started exceptionally for Gateway, which recorded its busiest May in the airport’s history, bringing in 145,000 visitors.
How has Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport expanded?
The airport grew its capacity to handle passengers by opening a 30,000-square-feet five-gate terminal in February. Along with added gates, the addition brought a new expanded holding area, retail space and more outdoor dining and seating spaces.
“The Airport Authority has invested millions of dollars to ensure traveling families have a Just Plane Easy experience when they travel through Gateway Airport, and that investment is paying dividends,” Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority Board Chair Mayor Julia Wheatley said. “We look forward to continuing this trend this coming winter.”
Commercial passenger service began in 2007 at the airport.
In 2022, Gateway opened the John S. McCain III Air Traffic Control Tower to adapt to the increased flights.
