2 people, including a child, hospitalized after escaping from Phoenix apartment fire

PHOENIX – Two people, including a young child, were hospitalized after escaping from a Phoenix apartment fire on Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Crews responded to a complex near 4500 E. Cactus Road around 8:30 a.m. and found heavy smoke and fire coming from the first two floors of a building and extending to the third floor, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

Firefighters extinguished the flames and helped treat two people — including a 2-year-old child — who got out of the burning building on their own.

The patients were taken to a hospital in stable condition to be treated for smoke inhalation.

The city’s Community Assistance Program responded to the scene to provide support for 13 people displaced by the apartment fire.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
