Man considered person of interest in fatal Tucson police recruit shooting arrested near border

Another man was reportedly taken into custody over the weekend in connection with the fatal shooting of a Tucson police recruit in August.

KGUN 9 reported that U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials contacted 30-year-old Alexis Monter as he was entering the U.S. through a pedestrian lane in Douglas. They discovered he had an active warrant that identified him as a person of interest in the Aug. 19 killing of 23-year-old Carlos Ramirez.

The Douglas Police Department responded and took him into custody.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said Monter is considered a person of interest in the homicide investigation as he is believed to be the last registered of the Acura MDX that was believed to be used in the shooting.

On Aug. 22,  39-year-old Santiago Jorge Rogers was arrested at a Tucson hotel in relation to the shooting and an unidentified suspect was located but not taken into custody as investigators work to determine his involvement.

Two days later, Alex Barnett was booked into jail on first-degree murder charges after a three-hour standoff with law enforcement at an apartment complex.

Ramirez and his 23-year-old fiancee were found with gunshot wounds just before 6 a.m. on Aug. 19 at a home in the Valencia West community west of Tucson. Ramirez was pronounced dead at the scene and his fiancee was hospitalized in stable condition with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

Ramirez served as a Pima County Sheriff’s Department corrections officer before becoming a Tucson Police Department recruit. His fiancee, whose name was not released, is a current Pima County corrections officer.
