Paraglider gets tangled in power line after hitting pole on Phoenix descent

A paraglider hit a power pole and became stuck in its lines during a Phoenix descent on Sunday morning, authorities said.

PHOENIX — A paraglider hit a power pole and became stuck in its lines during a Phoenix descent on Sunday morning, authorities said.

Crews with the Phoenix Fire Department reported to the entanglement near Thunderbird Road and Seventh Street around 6:30 a.m.

The unidentified adult man was able to get out of his harness and onto a nearby rock with the help of firefighters, who then helped him down the mountain.

He was evaluated on scene and elected not to be taken to the hospital, as there were no injuries to report.

Who would do that anywhere near a powerline?

Did not realize that paragliding was permitted in that area. Yeah, there are mountains (No. Mountain, Lookout, etc.) but also lots of roads, traffic, homes and businesses.

They most likely started out well removed from the power poles, became complacent once airborne and simply lost situational awareness until the electrified wires loomed largely in front without a viable path of escape.
