Phoenix park named for César Chávez renamed Águila Park

Phoenix’s César Chávez Park has a new name.

The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Board voted Wednesday to rename the Laveen park and its community center as Águila Park and Águila Community Center.

The move follows a City Council directive earlier this year to remove the labor leader’s name from all city streets and facilities.

The board launched the renaming process in March and surveyed residents in May, offering six options including Laveen, Farmworkers and Desert Oasis. Águila emerged as the favorite when the survey closed June 15.

“Our parks and facilities belong to the people we serve, and community input is essential in ensuring they continue to reflect the identity and values of Phoenix residents,” Parks Department Director Martin Whitfield said in a statement about the name change.

The city will now remove existing signage and memorabilia and install new signs at the park and community center, located at Baseline Road and 35th Avenue.
